A school environment can be academically, behaviorally, and socially challenging for students with Asperger Syndrome. Likewise, teachers and classmates experience difficulty understanding the unique characteristics that these students exhibit in school. This one-day workshop will focus on the distinguishing features associated with Asperger Syndrome. Strategies to support these students in school, in their home, and in their social life will be described and discussed. Though a brief overview of autism will be provided, this workshop is not intended to address the intricacies of diagnosis or the special education process. Presenter: Dr. Julie Donnelly has a Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a focus area in Autism. She has over 26 years of teaching experience related to this area. She currently serves as a Missouri Autism Consultant for Project ACCESS. Julie is a long time associate of Project ACCESS and has been supportive of the project since its 1985 inception. She provides workshops and trainings on autism, as well as providing consultation with schools and agencies. In addition, she is a presenter at national and international conferences and publishes on topics in Autism and Special Education.
