Event Description

Assistive technology is recognized as an important component of the individual education programs of students who receive special education. IDEA 2004 emphasizes this importance by indicating that IEP teams consider all students’ needs for assistive technology when completing individual education plans. The purpose of this professional development session is to help teachers increase their awareness of assistive technology, and the assistive technology service delivery process used in educational settings. The processes of consideration and assessment will be described, using the Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services as a guide. Resources to assist in the provision of assistive technology services will be provided.

Objectives

• Review specific requirements of IDEA 2004 regarding assistive technology and education

• Describe functional areas that can be addressed by assistive technology in educational settings
