Assistive Technology in the Classroom: Putting the Tools in the Student's Hands

Event Description

Assistive technology provides the opportunity for students with disabilities to compensate for difficulties they experience with engaging in the educational process. Identifying measurable outcomes for assistive technology and incorporating assistive technology tools and strategies as part of the student’s educational routine is a challenge. This professional development session will describe best practices associated with incorporating assistive technology in the IEP, implementing assistive technology and evaluating its effectiveness. The Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services will be used to guide this discussion. Additionally, this session will describe primary types of assistive technology used to address the areas of reading, writing, math and computer access.

Objectives

• Identify best practices associated with incorporating assistive technology in the IEP,

implementing assistive technology and evaluating its effectiveness

• Apply concepts learned regarding assistive technology to current case load

• Identify assistive technology resources

• Describe and provide examples of assistive technology to address reading, writing, math and computer access

Presenter: Bob Cunningham has been an occupational therapy educator since 1991 and is currently employed by Maryville University. Bob is also an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) and owner of Cunningham Consulting LLC, which provides assistive technology consultation and assistive technology evaluations in the areas of education and alternative computer access for persons of all ages in the St. Louis region. He is currently completing a doctoral degree in Special Education at the University of Missouri - St. Louis.
